BBC radio 4 programme featuring Tideway Sailability

2SAIL 2012

For the last two years Tideway has been recruiting blind and sighted people onto this project. We now have a team of nine, three of them visually impaired. These are now training together by joining in the Watersports Centre's Winter Race Series and sailing every Sunday using the Centre's performance dinghies. They are provided with drysuits but even so it needs a quality of bravery to come out on some mornings. The next event in their calendar is to go down to the Laser Centre at Weymouth for a long weekend in the spring for very exciting sailing in sight of the Olympics course. After that there will be regular sailing including going on the River.
The London Marathon Charitable Trust has given us a generous grant enough to buy a second Hawk 20 dayboat which will come in March. This will enable more River sailing. The aim in the summer is that they will do a Seamanship course.
We are very proud that one of the VI members has been chosen to be a back-up crew for the World Blind Sailing Championships in New Zealand this year.
We are not going to do a special recruitment this year of any more people onto 2sail 2012 but if there are people with some experience we will be very happy to bring them in. We have now established Tideway as being a club where blind people are welcome and that reputation will continue. Blind or VI people with no experience can come to us for the usual taster day and if they enjoy sailing then they can join and see if they can catch up the 2sail 2012 people to be part of that team. We will encourage them to do that.

Contact Tideway 2Sail if you want to join the program. This is your chance to see if sailing could be your passion. Here, in the middle of London, is the very best and most challenging teaching and it's for you to try! You need to book. Ring 020 8858 1822. Details of how to find us through the Contact Us and Location links.
