BBC radio 4 programme featuring Tideway Sailability

2SAIL 2012

Do you have the ambition to sail with the World's blind sailors? This is a project for Londoners with no experience of sailing to learn to sail together to the highest standards . Ten of them will be visually impaired and ten sighted. It is a 5 year programme culminating in 2012 - the year of the London Olympics. There will be travel opportunities with exchange visits and entry to the World Blind championships.

Come and try! The first event took place on SUNDAY, 29TH APRIL, 2007. and a group of visually impaired and sighted landlubbers gathered for their introduction to sailing. This produced a pilot group of 4 people - 2 blind and 2 sighted. They have been training and sailing together ever since, joined by one more sighted person. They raced throughout the winter and had a weekend at the Laser Centre on Portland Harbour as an exciting reward.

On April 20th this year we had the 2008 event to introduce more people. The Metro advertised it for us free and we have had a magnificent response. If you missed that date there is still a chance to join. Ring Clare 020 8858 1822 to find a Sunday or a Thursday to come and meet us. Introduction to 2Sail consists of: a first free day to try sailing and meet Tideway people and boats. You are welcome to several days like this and then we ask you to do a free 2-day RYA Level 1 course.

Sat May 17th and Sun May 25th are the dates of the first course. At the end of that you and we will have a good idea of whether you could commit to the full programme. It is a heavy commitment. If you really want to go to the top you will need a passion for sailing to enable you to give up day after day to sailing to gain the experience and training you will need - as in any sport. Paralympic sport is even more dedicated.

Once you feel you can make this commitment we ask you to put down £250 to nail it. Then we take your training further (Level 2) and give you the opportunity and the support you'll need to go all the way - and the extra equipment like dry suits for winter sailing. The sighted people will have to discover how they can best support those who are not - it is a very special skill and needs a strong sense of teamwork. Should you decide at any time that sailing is not for you or you prefer a less ambitious form of sailing then there's no problem in dropping out from 2Sail 2012 and just being a Tideway member.
