| Experience, Training and Qualifications |
The RYA (Royal Yachting Association) is the main representative body for sailing and
boating/watersports in the UK. They have a program of training courses for each watersport discipline and
approve numberous training centres and clubs around the country.
There is currently no legislation preventing anyone from having a boat and sailing it themselves without any formal
training. However, clubs and centres can require evidence of either suitable experience or completion of relevant courses.
We are closely associated with Surrey Docks Watersports Centre and many of our members have completed courses run by
this centre, it is an RYA approved training centre and is part of London Borough of Southwark Leisure Services. Tideway can give advice on training and help you get recognition of any sailing experience and skills you may have accumulated. We have a team of sailing instructors who work in cooperation with SCWC. Our Instructors, Safety Boat crews and many members have acquired training through SCWC and other training centres.
