BECOME A MEMBER

Tideway Sailability is a sailing club WITH people with disabilities, not just FOR people with disabilities.

The ethos of Tideway is that all our members help each other, irrespective of if you are with or without a disability.

Whether it is launching boats for those who cannot or less physical help such as offering advice and sailing tips; everyone at Tideway has something to offer, even if it is simply inspirational by being brave enough to sail against all the odds.

Members pay an annual subscription of just £60 for adults and £15 for young people under 18.

There is a small additional fee for each sailing session.

Members help to run the club and take out participants who are unable to sail for themselves.

Membership terms and conditions require all members to contribute time as a volunteer for a minimum of 30 hours per year, this ensures our cost for resources are kept to a minimum, enabling the membership fees to remain at an affordable level.

The membership fees are set at at a low figure so as to be affordable to those not working or on a low income.

Rather than have a higher fee for those in paid work we ask that a Gift Aid donation is made at a level that each individual feels represents the benefits enjoyed commensurate with their income and circumstances.

We also have regular volunteers who are not members, volunteers ensure we can operate our activities as we have no paid staff; volunteers come along and help out with the day-to-day running of the charity and if they have the relevant RYA sailing qualifications, they take our participants out sailing.

Have a look at the Volunteering page for more information on volunteering.

What’s Stopping You?

My disability
We have experience of most disabilities, some of our boats have electric servo assist to pull in the ropes and operate the steering, a wheelchair style joystick can control these, or a chin controller or we can even obtain a sip & puff system.

We have buddy sailors for those with Visual Impairment.

We also have hoists for gently lifting people in and out of wheelchairs and the boats.

Transportation
Tideway has good public transport links, we are close to Canada Water and Surrey Quays tube stations (Jubilee and  London overground lines) and numerous bus routes –  More travel information is on our Find us page.

Our network of members and volunteers are also here to help you solve logistical issues, just ask.

I am not confident around or in water
Being comfortable and calm in and on the water is important. Everybody wears a buoyancy aid or life jacket for those who cannot swim, whilst getting splashed is all part of sailing, falling in is not.

I cannot sail
Many of our members started as non-sailors and have gone on to learn the finer points of boat and sail trim.  Others have started to race competitively.

Many still just enjoy the freedom of the water with our support.

Need to know more, shy?

We prefer people to come along a say hello, have a cuppa and a chat and see what we do and who we are, we feel this is more relaxing and less intimidating way to be introduced to a new experience.  This way you can see the activities and speak to other members & volunteers without any obligation.

Please come along and visit, you can see what we do and decide if it is the activity for you. The best time to arrive is between 10.30 and 11.00 as this will have allowed us to organise the days activities to be able to chat with you.

If you prefer to have a named contact to ask for, simply send an email to enquiries@TidewaySailability.org and tell us what day you would like to come along.

Have more questions?

Get in touch with us, we’d love to speak to you about getting involved with Tideway.
